Miyagi made her last porn movie, Happy Endings, in 2003, and has since moved on to low-budget mainstream productions, while continuing to work as a stripper and peddle Internet porn.

"I have nothing left to hide," she said when filing her papers for the November election. "My slogan is, 'I'm bare and honest at all times.'" The popular American political blog, Wonkette, has already endorsed the candidate, who is running under her real name, Melody Damayo. "Do we really need any more reason to endorse her? She's a fucking PORN STAR. Running for GOVERNOR OF NEVADA. As a REPUBLICAN. 'Nuff said," wrote Wonkette.

She appeared at her filing in hot pink stiletto heels and a very low cut pink suit, accompanied by an entourage of "campaign cuties" and two bodyguards. Wearing a matching pillbox hat that had a certain Jackie Kennedy feel to it, she did something decidedly un-Jackie when she opened her suit coat to reveal a matching pink bra just overflowing with breasts that have been pumped up to 36DD dimensions.

On her website, http://Mimi4Governor.com, the 32-year old Philippine-American, has posted positions on issues ranging from terrorism and Iraq to problems in schools and the criminal justice system. Hinting that there may be a touch of the dominatrix to her political views, Miyagi says of American schools: "There's no order, little security and little discipline."

An early supporter of the War in Iraq, she thinks President George W. Bush has fallen down on the job. "The coalition that was formed appears superficial," she says.

On economic issues, she holds a mixed bag of positions. She wants to see tax rates slashed like a good libertarian but also wants a substantial increase in the minimum wage. And despite her Asian heritage, Miyagi may be a protectionist at heart: "We have to find a way to manufacture products here with our own American workforce," she says.

Miyagi was born in the Philippines in 1973 and claims on her web site to have been a child prodigy who graduated from high school – the Mindanao Mission Academy in her hometown of Davao City – in one and half years. She also claims to be a classical pianist and to have taken several courses in marksmanship and criminal investigation. She is a member of the National Rifle Association.

She went into the porn business in 1993 after answering an ad but was disillusioned because the profits from her numerous on-screen romps were going into the pockets of producers. "She realized that if she wanted to make money in this business, she had to take control of her career," her official biography says. She became the publisher of Oriental Dolls, an erotic Asian magazine now called Asian Hotties and also pioneered streaming video on porn websites targeting men with erotic fantasies about Asian women. She has also appeared in Playboy magazine as a "pro-wrestling student."

The run for governor is just one of many ways this enterprising Filipina packages and sells her Mimi Miyagi persona. On the "official" website dedicated to her adult endeavors, for example, fans can purchase a life size plaster cast of the "Famous and well known Butt that all her fans came to love and want." For US$400 you can "have a piece of Mimi" in a choice of four colors. For another US$75, the ass sculpture is delivered in air-brushed flesh tones that "make Mimi's Skin tone come to life." She also continues to attend erotic conventions and dance at strip clubs in between campaign appearances.

Also on her site are links to a porn-star auction site that offers various bits of lace she has worn in her movies. Bidding is currently open on a thong bikini and a "Pink See-Through Nightie & Lace Panties with 3 Autographed Photos & the DVD In Which Mimi Wears Your Lingerie Just For You!" Fans who donate $25 to her campaign for governor will also receive an autographed picture of the candidate stripped down and ready to make policy.

Also a mom, Miyagi devotes considerable time on her Mimi's Diary, her blog (http://mimimiyagi.blogspot.com/), to talking about her daughter and musing over plans for the future. Perhaps wanting to follow in the footsteps of porn-star-turned-actress Traci Lord, she wants to be a serious actress. She recently filled the role of a senator for a movie called "Devil's Canyon" in which she apparently keeps her clothes on. "I realized how much I thoroughly love and enjoy acting now!" she blogged of her experience. "I've never had the luxury to devote so much energy into a character. All my acting experience was usually during an adult film, and the distraction of knowing I had to have sex on camera never gave me the full satisfaction of what fun acting can be. Now I understand the passion for the craft! I want to start takin' some acting workshops now."

Her desire to enter into politics appears to stem from an experience in 2004. At the time, she claims in her blog, her daughter Isabela, now seven, was abducted by a family member and she was forced to go to court to get her back. In the process, she claims she "suffered from judicial activism" and had to file for bankruptcy and sell her extensive gun collection to pay court fees. After a year-long court battle in Las Vegas, the child was returned but not before Miyagi says she was persecuted for being an adult star and forced to undergo drug tests and court-ordered psychiatric examinations at her own expense. "Just because I have a porn past, doesn't mean I should be treated 'less than human,'" she wrote on her blog in 2004 as she asked fans to contribute to a legal defense fund.

It was as a result of the court battle that "Mimi Miyagi", a garishly dolled up character that one might assume was vaguely Japanese, instead was revealed as a Filipina. "I'm slowly but surely allowing my general public to know more TRUTHS about me," she wrote in 2004. "Now you all know my real name: Melody. Now you all know where I was really born and my true heredity: Filipina. You all know my real age."

On the day of her filing, the candidate did not dwell on her past travails but summed up her reasons for running with characteristic good humor: "Look, I'm not some old bastard playing golf. I'm for the people, which means raising the minimum wage and getting rid of business taxes for entertainers. I'm a Republican because I love to bear arms and breasts!"

That's a platform anybody could support.

In the centerfold, all evidence of Miss April's nipple and the pigmented skin surrounding it has been airbrushed out, her demure proportions and midriff concealed by a lacy powder blue slip and matching pair of sensible briefs.

But despite art directors' deft navigation of the strict obscenity and nudity clauses in Indonesia's pornography legislation, it is unlikely that a second edition of Playboy Indonesia will ever reach newsstands in the world's most populous Muslim nation.

A month ago, the magazine's offices were ransacked by a group of 300 extreme Islamists who call themselves the Islamic Defenders Front. Police looked on as windows were smashed, yet no arrests have been made.

Days later, Editor in Chief Erwin Arnada announced the indefinite suspension of future editions.

"The police say we have broken no laws," Arnada told reporters as he left a police station in Jakarta after questioning.

The storm is not likely to blow over quickly. In an interview, the front's chief said its attacks were just a warning to publishers and that other groups could do considerably more damage.

The front "made these protests not only to protect society but also to protect the media itself," said H. Muhammad Ridwan Voderi, the group's secretary general.

"There are many other groups who are against pornography and the media, and they can do more damage than what the (front) has done, such as bombing the offices," he said. "We were just trying to get through to the media before the other groups."

The alarming comments also reflect sensitivity over the Iraq war and the war on terror.

"Playboy represents the image of the West and with everything going on in the world lately, with the tension between the United States and the Islamic world, anything that represents the West is considered anti-Muslim," says Gadis Arivia, founder of the women's activist magazine Jurnal Perempuan.

For the front, the name Playboy also represents a perceived moral decay that pervades the West, which they claim to be preventing the spread of across their secular nation.

"We told the publishers before they started they should change the name because the image of Playboy internationally is very bad, its identity is pornographic images," Voderi said.

The ferment over Playboy Indonesia is just one chapter in a debate about pornography laws that is polarizing women's rights groups, Islamic fundamentalists and a government which is struggling to sustain the democratic momentum that began with the fall of former President Suharto's regime in 1998.

An anti-pornography bill is being vigorously debated in parliament and is expected to pass by the middle of the year.

Opponents argue that Indonesia already has three pieces of legislation regulating content on television and in the media, in addition to a criminal code which prohibits the distribution of pornographic material.

The new legislation, say women's rights groups, is just a smokescreen for a Sharia (Islamic) based law that is fundamentally anti-women.

"When you look at the bill, there is nothing really in it about pornography or the distribution of pornographic material," Arivia said.

"But is says a lot about what women can and cannot wear, what they can and cannot do, where they can go … a lot of Sharia law that restricts women."

Arivia is one of many critics who fear that if the bill finds its way through the parliament in its current incarnation, men's magazines won't be the only thing forced to cover up.

"The new bill doesn't respect the diversity of culture, and is a threat to the freedom of speech of artists … and our identity," said Husna Mulya, another women's rights activist.

"It will regulate what people can wear and which parts of the body can be exposed. It could also see writings, poems, songs, etc. banned because they contain references to eroticism or sexuality."

The defenders front has also made claims that pornography is provoking Muslim men to commit violent sexual crimes against women in Indonesia.

"There have already been a lot of cases of crime due to the effects of pornography in magazines, television, movies, etc. Nowadays we are hearing of fathers raping their daughters, sons raping their mothers and so on. Will the media take responsibility for this? Of course not. They don't want to know the effect their magazines has on people; they don't care," Voderi said.

Which is an indication that it will take much more than an airbrushed nipple to lower temperatures in the world's most populous Muslim nation.

The teacher, Sterling Johnson, was charged with misdemeanor assault and a misdemeanor count of disturbing the peace. The school system will seek to have him fired, said Creg Williams, superintendent of public schools in St. Louis.

Johnson, 55, is an industrial arts teacher at the Pruitt Military Academy, a magnet school in the district.

After arriving at school Monday morning, police said Johnson asked a student to retrieve a bag containing a bottle of cognac from his car. Police then said Johnson rubbed the buttocks and thigh of a 13-year-old girl and directed a sexual remark at another 13-year-old girl.

The principal ordered the teacher, who has been teaching for 22 years, to leave after becoming aware of his behavior, police said. Johnson complied but returned a short time later and was arrested. Williams said a hidden bottle of liquor was found in Johnson's classroom.

The new law replaces a repealed one against the “infamous crime against nature.” That law was repealed in 2001 but was previously amended to exclude sex with an animal.

A legislative staff memo said the only current state law related to bestiality is a public indecency statute that prohibits certain human contact with animals. That crime is a misdemeanor unless the presence of a minor makes it a felony.

The new law, which takes effect 90 days after the end of the current legislative session, will make sexual intercourse with an animal and specified other sex acts a felony.

The bill (SB1160) was proposed after the March arrest of a Mesa deputy fire chief, Leroy Johnson.

Johnson, 52 at the time of his arrest, was accused of alleged bestial acts with his next-door neighbor’s lamb. He was booked on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, trespassing and public sexual indecency. He filed for retirement from the fire department after his arrest.

Shane Erin Mack, 20, of Belt, Mont., was charged with the gross misdemeanors of identity theft and theft by false representation. He made his first court appearance on Monday. Bail was set at $2,500. He remained in jail Tuesday afternoon.

Steele County prosecutor Scott Schrener said investigators only had documentation in hand for about $500 worth of calls, but the victim reported that $2,350 worth of calls had been made. Schrener said the criminal charges could be upgraded in the future.

The calls were made from March 23 to May 13, according to court papers.

Mack allegedly told investigators he admitted taking the debit card out of his roommate's wallet and using it to make up to 30 calls to adult phone lines from public phones on campus, the criminal complaint said.

College spokesman Tom Lawson said Mack would not be allowed to return to the school when classes resume in the fall. According to the college Web site, the college offers a Christian "education program which imparts a biblical worldview."

A call to the public defender who represented Mack in court on Monday was not immediately returned.

Mack's next court appearance was scheduled for June 1.

For a company that offers explicit adult programming to spearhead such a multifaceted anti-indecency campaign is unusual — and responsible, according to Playboy Entertainment Group president Jim Griffiths.

“What’s important to us that people understand that we are supporting our programming but also supporting a person’s right to choose not to see our programming,” Griffiths said. “If they choose not to see our programming, we’re giving them the tools to protect their children from seeing our programming, as well.”

At the forefront of Playboy’s good citizenship efforts is Hefner, the business-savvy daughter of Playboy empire founder Hugh Hefner. Griffiths said Hefner is fully behind the campaign and will also be its point person.

He added that Hefner plans to be front and center in Playboy’s effort to lure telecommunications conglomerates such as Comcast Corp., Time Warner Inc., Microsoft Corp., Verizon Communications Inc., Sony Corp. and Viacom Inc. to join its cause — as well as lawmakers.

The campaign, developed for Playboy by Long Island-based marketing and promotion company Team Services, does not prominently feature Playboy’s famed bunny logo. Except for a tiny credit line at the bottom of each Web page, Playboy’s bunny prints aren’t visible anywhere.

The tag line for the campaign is “Parental control. Our right. Our responsibility.” And the site that supports it attempts to be the most in-depth and informative source of technology and ratings-control options available on the Internet.

Besides its own content, for instance, the site also provides links to the various ratings boards and parental-control organizations within the Internet, video-gaming, cable, satellite and satellite-radio space. Its “Resource Center” links to other parental-guidance sites in the cable, satellite, motion-picture and other related industries, including controlyourtv.com (controlyourtv.com) from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association.

The site also features a media-download page where operators and other industry companies can access TV spots, ad slicks, direct-mail pieces and Web banners for distribution via various media.

Playboy plans to roll out its campaign over the next few months, with Hefner simultaneously — and somewhat ironically — waving the flags of both First Amendment rights to free speech and parental responsibility for controlling what’s seen in any given household.
